Coal India Limited has launched one of its largest recruitment drives of the year with the release of Advertisement No. 03/2026 for Management Trainee (MT) recruitment across multiple technical and administrative disciplines. The Maharatna PSU has announced 660 vacancies, with the online application process scheduled to begin on May 12, 2026.

The recruitment comes at a time when PSU hiring remains highly competitive, especially among engineering graduates seeking long-term career stability, higher salary structures, and government-backed employment security. Unlike several PSU recruitments that depend on GATE scores, Coal India has opted for a Computer Based Test (CBT)-only selection process this year, significantly widening the applicant pool.

Why This Recruitment Is Drawing Unusual Attention

Coal India recruitment cycles traditionally attract strong participation, but the 2026 cycle is being viewed differently for three major reasons.

First, the recruitment removes dependence on GATE scores, making it accessible to a much wider engineering audience. Second, the vacancy count is significantly higher compared to several PSU technical recruitments announced this year. Third, Coal India continues to offer one of the strongest PSU compensation structures for fresh technical recruits entering E-1 grade.

Industry observers also note that PSU recruitments linked to core infrastructure sectors are regaining popularity due to increasing uncertainty in private-sector hiring cycles. This has intensified competition in public-sector technical examinations during the past two years.

Eligibility Criteria and Educational Qualification

Candidates applying for engineering disciplines must possess a full-time BE/BTech degree in the relevant branch with at least 60% marks from a recognised university or institute. SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are eligible for relaxation in qualifying marks as per government norms.

For specialised disciplines:

  • Geology candidates must possess relevant postgraduate qualifications.
  • Rajbhasha applicants require an MA in Hindi with specified language criteria.
  • Company Secretary applicants must hold valid ICSI membership.

Final-year candidates whose results are expected before the specified deadline mentioned in the notification are also eligible to apply under prescribed conditions.

Selection Process: No Interview, CBT Carries Full Weightage

One of the most significant changes in this recruitment is the absence of an interview round. The final merit list will be prepared entirely on the basis of performance in the Computer Based Test.

The recruitment process includes:

  1. Computer Based Online Test (CBT)
  2. Document Verification
  3. Initial Medical Examination

This CBT-only approach is expected to increase transparency while also increasing competition due to the removal of subjective interview evaluation.

Salary Structure and Service Bond Details

Selected candidates will be appointed as Management Trainees in E-1 grade with an initial basic pay of ₹60,000 per month during training. After allowances and other PSU benefits, the overall package becomes substantially higher depending on posting location and subsidiary allocation.

Coal India has also specified a mandatory service agreement bond. Selected candidates will be required to serve the company for a minimum period of 60 months after joining. A bond amount of ₹3 lakh will apply under the prescribed conditions.

The recruitment notification also confirms that postings may occur anywhere in India, including coalfield areas and subsidiary operations. Candidates will be asked to provide subsidiary preferences, though final allocation will depend on organisational requirements.

Application Fee and Reservation Policy

Candidates belonging to General, OBC, and EWS categories will need to pay an application fee of ₹1000 plus applicable GST charges. SC, ST, PwBD candidates, and departmental candidates from Coal India subsidiaries are exempted from fee payment.

Reservations and relaxations for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, PwBD, and Ex-Servicemen categories will be applicable according to the Government of India guidelines.
